Daily Discussions on Harry S. Truman Photos | | Who Was the Last Great President of the U. S.? | | Personally, I believe it was Harry S. Truman, a common man with common sense. He made some extremely difficult decisions in extremely difficult times. Who do think was the last great president? Kennedy? Johnson? Nixon? Ford? Carter? Reagan? Bush? Clinton? Bush? Obama? Or was it earlier than that? Washington, Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, Wilson, F. Roosevelt? | |
| | Can "Dewey Defeats Truman" happen in this election? | | Weeks prior to the 1948 election, many leading editorial writers and political columnists relied on early Gallup Polls, which predicted Thomas E. Dewey's win over incumbent Harry S. Truman. In spite of all the media predictions to the contrary, even based on Gallup Polls a few weeks before the election, Truman still defeated Dewey in the presidential election. Do you think this could happen today, even with the more sophisticated forms of media and polling methods? | |

| | Can You Believe This? | | Brad and Angelina's Political Family Tree
By Sarah Hall Wed 26/03/08 (From an MSN article)
Forget voting along party lines in the upcoming presidential election—Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt could vote along bloodlines, if they were so inclined.
Researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society have discovered that Jolie is distantly related to Hillary Clinton, while Pitt is a cousin of Barack Obama.
Jolie and Clinton are ninth cousins, twice removed, while Pitt and Obama are ninth cousins, according to a genealogical study conducted over the last three years.
In addition to her kinship with Jolie, Clinton is also related to Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette, researchers found. Other cousins include Camilla Parker-Bowles and Jack Keroauc.
Obama, on the other hand, shares his ancestry with six U.S. presidents, including current Commander-in-Chief George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush.
Other far-reaching Obama relations include Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison, as well as Vice President D!ck Cheney and Sir Winston Churchill.

| | The Unconstitutionality of the National Day of Prayer | | Even though I am not a religious person, I believe fully in a person's right to practice whatever religion they wish. I'm not offended by the practice of religion, of hey, if a person wants to pray, then go right ahead; you're not stepping on my toes by praying. However, there is a line that should not be crossed when it comes to religion, and that line is drawn in the first amendment with this clause: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free excercise thereof..."Wanna pray? That's cool, do it wherever and whenever you want. However, this is America, and you do not need a governmentally endorsed day to pray to whatever God or philosophical force you worship. Somehow, though, good ol' Harry S. Truman thought is was necessary to sign a specific day of prayer into a law for the United States back in 1952. It's not enough that you can drop down to your knees and pray to (insert deity here) any time you want...somehow the U.S needed an actual government endorsed day of prayer. The problem is, the government isn't supposed to make laws concerning religion, period. It should neither restrict nor endorse any religion... | |
| | The salary of The U.S. President. | | As most Americans know, most President's (with the exception of Harry S. Tuman) are millionaires. After elected, they are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as their salary each year. This means that they truly have no knowledge of what the "average" citizen of this country does to survive on their meager salaries.
I think it would be a great idea that anyone running for President has to live for an entire year on minimum wage as a salary. It doesn't even have to be minimum wage. It can be $11.00 an hour. Maybe then our President's can appreciate what we go through day in and day out to survive and make ends meet! Heck, the same should apply for all of our elected Senators and Congressmen/women!
I know this will never, ever happen, but I would like to kow what ya'll think about this idea.
