| Abraham Lincoln and the Constitution | | ABRAHAM LINCOLN believed in interpreting the Constitution through the Declaration of Independence. It was this political philosophy that allowed him to buck the accepted political establishment regarding states' rights and slavery and sign the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in this country. He simply read the words:"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." And he knew slavery could not stand. And it's a very good thing for the Pro choice movement that those words are not in the Constitution or that the Supreme Court didn't use the Lincoln standard huh?The Declaration allowed us as a nation to set ourselves a part as a nation that valued individual liberty and freedom and the rights to which all men are entitled and I firmly believe that it Founding Fathers used it as a blue print upon which they built the Constitution, so it is not untoward to look to it as a standard. I admire him for the fact that he's self educated, took the bar after studying on his own for many hours while balancing his time with work on the farm. He passed the bar with flying colors.
